FOLLOWING THE 30,000 strong 'grants not fees' demonstration, the National Union of Students (NUS)is calling for a mass lobby of parliament on 3 December. In previous years the NUS leadership has contented itself with calling one demonstration a year.
However, with the government white paper set to emerge onto this year's parliamentary agenda and a growing groundswell of opposition on campus, the pressure is on NUS to build on the success of the demonstration and mount an ongoing campaign of protests. This will be a great opportunity to strike another blow against Tony Blair's elitist agenda. But its success will depend on student activists mobilising seriously for it and ensuring that their student unions do the same.
