Lecturers' union discusses national strike

Issue No. 2217

The national executive (higher education) of the lecturers’ UCU union was due to discuss national strike ballots this week.

It decided at the end of June to begin separate national ballots of members in further and higher education after the summer break.

Lecturers are fighting against job cuts and for decent pay. Many have already taken strike action and forced college managements to retreat on specific cuts—such as at King’s College London and at Leeds University.

Beginning national ballots would mean branches would not be left to fight alone.

Some lecturers could strike on or around 20 October—the day of the Tories’ “spending review”. The union’s executive should waste no time in starting the ballots.
