Strike against 'crumby' deal

Issue No. 2218

More than 150 bakers at Maple Leaf in Walsall, West Midlands, were set to strike on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

It comes after 91 percent of bakers’ union BFAWU members voted for action at the site over pay, holiday and overtime.

In June some 120 out of the 200 union members refused to sign new contracts that would have slashed their pay and conditions.

They then voted to strike—but a two-day walkout was halted at the last minute for talks last month.

The union recommended members accept a new offer after these talks—but they rejected it. The threat of sacking is still hanging over the workers. Striking is the only option—so they must make sure the strike is not called off again.
