Phone scandal taps the Tories

Issue No. 2218

David Cameron’s chief spin doctor Andy Coulson, the former editor of the News of the World, has denied any knowledge of journalists tapping phones during his time in charge of the paper.

But ex-News of the World journalist Sean Hoare claimed last weekend that he knew all about it. The paper’s former royal editor, Clive Goodman, and a private investigator used by the newspaper were jailed in 2007 after phone hacking disclosures.

Why has Andy Hayman, the former officer in charge of the Scotland Yard investigation who said police had found “only a handful” of victims, written columns for the Times, a News International stablemate of the News of the World?
