Barnet council workers and supporters protested on Tuesday of this week against cuts and the North London council’s plans for mass privatisation.
The Unison union has registered an official dispute over the plans, which the council calls “Future Shape” but are better known by workers as “easyCouncil”.
The easyCouncil programme is based on low-cost airline easyJet.
Tory council leader Mike Freer says, “Their relentless drive for keeping costs down has worked for them and we are looking at doing the same.”
It will see every single service at Barnet council put up for privatisation: finance, libraries, pay roll, pensions, revenues and benefits—the lot. Multinational companies would take over the bulk of services.
The workers are already being balloted over threats to slash their redundancy scheme to the minimum allowed by law.
London firefighters were also planning to join the protest, as fat cat Barnet council Tory cabinet member and former mayor Brian Coleman is also their bullying boss (see Firefighters in a battle for us all).
