Federico Garcia Lorca

Selected Poems was originally published in 1960, and this new edition should introduce a yonger generation to the poetry of the Spanish writer Federico Garcia Lorca.

Nationalist rebels murdered him in 1936 at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War because of his pro-Republican beliefs. Lorca is best known for his plays, such as Blood Wedding and The House of Bernarda Alba. His poems are as beautiful and filled with tragedy.

The poems are presented in their original Spanish with plain prose translations of each, so that the reader can enjoy Lorca’s skilful and sensuous use of language.

Lorca’s work is rooted in the Andalusian and Spanish oral tradition. He was a poet of the people.
