Hutton wants to rob pensioners

by Nick Grant, NUT union executive member
Issue No. 2220

EARLY signs are emerging of the Tories’ plans for an onslaught on public sector pensions.

Ex-Labour minister Lord John Hutton met senior public sector union officials at the TUC two weeks ago to outline the scheme he is working on.

He said his report in October will shift pensions from being based on workers’ final salaries to an average across their career.

For most this will be lower.

He will also call for higher employee contributions—and to force all teachers to work to 65 to access their full pension.

Plans like these will provoke outrage across the unions.

If anything is going to ensure the coordinated strike action discussed at the TUC last week, it will be this sort of pensions raid.

His proposals should be met with the most determined resistance from all trade unionists.
