MORE THAN 100 tenants attended a meeting on Wednesday of last week to oppose the sell-off of three council estates in Tollington, north Islington, with a total of 1,500 homes. Speakers included local Labour MP Jeremy Corbyn and Nick Strauss, who detailed the broken promises that have followed transfer on the privatised Haggerston estate in Hackney.
Transfer plans at Tollington include the demolition of many homes and new houses for private sale to fund the redevelopment. The prospective transfer landlord, NBH, is part of the Places for People group which has just been placed under supervision by the Housing Corporation after a boardroom split and the forced resignations of five directors.
Tollington Against Privatisation is issuing leaflets on the estates. Meetings are to be held for minority groups to explain the issues in other languages.
HARINGEY COUNCIL is holding a Stock Options Appraisal on all its tenanted and leasehold properties. There will be an 'independent commission' followed by a consultation. There is pressure within the council to limit the consultation to the three privatisation options of stock transfer, PFI or Arms Length Management.
