Meet the Lord who wants to make work more dangerous

Issue No. 2222

The Tories are launching an assault on health and safety laws.

According to Lord Young—put in charge of reviewing health and safety rules by David Cameron—“What I have seen everywhere is a complete lack of common sense.

“This sort of nonsense has come from the last government trying to create a nanny state and trying to keep everybody in cotton wool.

“If I want to do something stupid and break my leg or neck, that’s up to me.”

The Tory former Cabinet minister’s previous contribution to society was to help draw up Margaret Thatcher’s privatisation plans.

The press is full of stories about silly health and safety rules. But most of these are myths—such as the one that schoolchildren must wear goggles when playing conkers.

Health and safety is not about the right of Tory peers to do stupid things but about what happens to people at work.

Last week construction company James Swinton Co Ltd, was fined £10,000 for negligence after Charles Wilkinson was killed at work.

The TUC say 20,000 people die each year due to injury or diseases linked to their work.
