More councils threaten workers with the sack

Issue No. 2222

Councils across Britain are threatening their workforces with the sack to force through attacks.

The Tory-Lib Dem coalition in Birmingham has sent out HR1 redundancy forms to its 26,000 staff.

The Lib Dems in Sheffield have also told their 8,500 council workers that they must accept worse terms and conditions, or be out of a job.

Tory-run councils in Walsall and Croydon are making the same threat.

The Unison and GMB unions in Birmingham are planning to ballot for strikes if management don’t back down.

Stuart Richards, the GMB West Midlands organiser said, “Councils are seeing dismissals as an easy option rather than engaging with the unions. We’re not going to sit back and take it.”
