Tory foreign secretary William Hague was caught lying last week, after kidnapped aid worker Linda Norgrove was killed by a US grenade in Afghanistan.
Hague took to the airwaves on Saturday to say she was “killed at the hands of her captors in the course of a rescue attempt”.
And on Sunday “British officials” were telling the press she had been “killed by an explosion caused by a suicide vest” worn by a kidnapper.
But by Monday morning, prime minister David Cameron had to admit, “Linda could have died as a result of a grenade detonated by the task force during the assault.”
Neither he nor Hague have explained this sudden turnabout in the official version of events.
This is one lie that’s now unravelling. But the Tories cling tenaciously to the greater lie that the war in Afghanistan is a fight for “freedom”.
