Tower Hamlets mayor election hots up

Issue No. 2224

Tower Hamlets in east London was the scene of a hotly contested election for mayor this week.

Socialist Worker supporters have been leafleting for Lutfur Rahman, the independent.

He was originally the Labour candidate but was removed by the party’s national executive.

Labour imposed Helal Uddin Abbas—the local members’ third choice—as the candidate.

Eight Labour councillors were so incensed by this move that they came out publicly for Lutfur Rahman.

Ken Livingstone joined a campaigning walkabout by Lutfur Rahman this week.
