Taxi drivers force council climbdown

by Mick Walsh
Issue No. 2226

Taxi drivers in Rossendale, Lancashire, have forced the borough council into a spectacular U-turn.

More than 250 cabbies were set to strike last weekend against the council’s

imposition of a new penalty points system.

They had also planned a blockade of Rawtenstall town centre.

The system would have threatened drivers with the possible loss of licences for “unacceptable behaviour” such as eating in cars.

The council has now scrapped the plans.

A spokesperson said, “The council saw our passion and that’s what turned the corner.”
