FIREFIGHTERS IN Wales are threatening to walk out if Rob Rayner is sacked for supporting a demonstration against the closure of a night-time casualty unit. Rob was on 'duty stand down period' when he and other firefighters visited the Prince Philip hospital, Llanelli, to show support for demonstrators.

They were campaigning for the reopening of the unit, which was closed recently. Rob is being supported by firefighters from mid and west Wales and by the committee for the improvement of hospital services at Llanelli, which is leading the protests.

Red Watch

RED WATCH, the rank and file paper for firefighters and control staff, recently held a successful meeting in London. We viewed the recent victory by postal workers in Oxford as an excellent example of what workers can achieve independently of the trade union bureaucracy.

We discussed the attacks our union is facing and in the wake of the national sell-out agreed the pressing need for a single rank and file organisation. Red Watch is intent on building a broad and inclusive rank and file organisation and calls for rank and file unity.
