48-hour strike at Southampton Daily Echo

Journalists at Newsquest Southampton started a 48-hour strike against a pay freeze on Tuesday. The NUJ members at the firm, which publishes Southampton’s Daily Echo, organised a protest at a press event in the town.

They plan to strike again on 16 and 17 November.

NUJ members at The Independent and Independent on Sunday newspapers have voted to ballot for industrial action over pay.

The company has refused to enter talks. Reporters are forced to work an “extreme” nine-hour night shift.
