Around 70 NUT union members attended the union’s LGBT conference on Saturday of last week.
There was a real mood to challenge homophobia in education and delegates were fearful of government plans for more academies and free schools.
Over £70 was raised to support striking NUJ workers.
After a lively debate, a motion on homophobic prejudice in religious schools was prioritised to be sent to the national NUT conference.
This left some delegates disappointed by this narrow focus when we face the racist English Defence League and Nazi British National Party. Discrimination is not limited to faith schools.
The motion will need to be amended to ensure that conference has the opportunity to support Love Music Hate Homophobia, fighting cuts, stopping academies and the linking of struggles.
Some 25 delegates signed the founding statement of Love Music Hate Homophobia, including the general secretary Christine Blower and deputy general secretary Kevin Courtney.
