Some 200 students occupied a lecture theatre at Sussex University on Monday of this week.
It’s a sign that students are building on the militancy of the Millbank protest and taking the spirit of resistance back to their campuses.
Tom is one of the occupiers. He told Socialist Worker, “We’re occupying one of the new lecture theatres at Sussex which is very symbolic.
“It opened this year at the same time as we were told there was no money for teaching staff.
“Five hundred Sussex students went to last Wednesday’s protest in London and we called today’s demonstration off the back of that.
“We didn’t plan to occupy—but that was the mood among students.
“We’ve already had messages flooding in from around Britain supporting us. We hope students on other campuses will follow our lead.”
The students are demanding that their university management condemns all cuts to higher education and any rise in tuition fees.
The students were still in occupation as Socialist Worker went to press.
Students at Manchester University occupied a key administration building for 24 hours last week to protest against proposed cuts in higher education.
