Issue No. 2228

Students in the occupation Education Camp

Students in the occupation Education Camp

Up to 50 students are occupying the Core 24 building at UWE (University of the West of England) Frenchay campus in Bristol.

They are calling for other students and lecturers to join their action. Several lecturers have already come to the occupation to show solidarity.

Students are establishing an “education camp” to discuss alternatives to funding cuts and fee increases. Workshops have already been held on “Political Economy” and “Values of Education”.

The occupation has been entertained by the Red Notes, the socialist choir and a soundsystem has been set up to keep

Steve Presence told Socialist Worker from the occupation that students will be discussing future plans for the occupation this evening.

The students had already planned a variety of actions for the week of Day X, including a joint rally with the lecturers’ UCU on Tuesday, a walkout on Wednesday—Day X itself—and motions to go to the student AGM on Thursday.

The university’s UCU is in dispute with management over the threat to 80 posts—around 25 percent—of the current posts at Grade I and Grade J level.
