The new United Left Alliance—made up of the People Before Profit Alliance, the Socialist Party, the Tipperary Workers and Unemployed Action Group, and others—marched together. They attracted a huge number around them.
The alliance plans to contest the forthcoming general election, and many on the march were excited about the possibilities of a joint challenge by the left in Ireland.
After the main rally, several thousand people gathered at a United Left Alliance rally to hear Socialist Party MEP Joe Higgins demand a nationwide strike, “to say that we will not pay for the crisis”.
Richard Boyd Barrett of the People Before Profit Alliance called on marchers to “lay siege to the Dail [parliament] on budget day—Tuesday 7 December”.
