Sit-in at power station site

Issue No. 2230

Workers building a new power station staged a sit-in protest today in a row over working conditions.

Sources told the Press Association that the demonstration hit work on the combined cycle gas turbine station being built for EDF Energy in West Burton in Nottinghamshire.

The dispute is believed to centre on clocking-on time, with workers claiming they were being told to spend up to 40 minutes a day walking to and from the site without being paid.

A source at the GMB union said, “The situation has been deteriorating for some time due to the unreasonable and bullying tactics of management, whose approach has been unhelpful.

“It has been reported to the GMB that contractors on the site are in breach of agreements covering the site and we would urge all parties to withdraw from unilateral action and honour the agreements they have made.”
