Ministers admit housing benefit cuts will hit millions

Report reveals cuts to housing benefit will hit nearly a million households

Issue No. 2231

An official government report into plans to cut housing benefit says more than 930,000 households—over two million individuals— will be hit by the policy.

The Department for Work and Pensions’ impact assessment, buried on its website, says homelessness will rise and more people will face overcrowding.

The report adds up to a damning indictment of the policy.

It says other risks include disruption to schooling—and that children who have been forced to move could end up being taught in “temporary classrooms”.
