The GMB union’s S38 branch in Sheffield this week voted to pay for a coach to take students to Thursday’s London demonstration.
“A student from the Sheffield university occupation really raised the spirits of our branch meeting of around 30 to 40 stewards,” said Bea Kay, a GMB shop steward.
“He spoke about how they were fighting for our kids’ future, for education, and the need for solidarity. We are facing our own issues, such as redundancies.
“I put in a motion calling for support for the occupation and £100 for a coach.
“But people said I was being a bit too conservative—and the amount started going up.
“Eventually the branch secretary said, ‘Sod it, let’s sponsor the whole coach’, which comes to about £750.”
