20,000 kids on food handouts

Issue No. 2232

Thousands of people will be forced to take charity food handouts or go hungry this winter because of soaring poverty.

The number of people needing food handouts has risen by more than 50 percent since 2009, according to the charity the Trussell Trust.

It says 60,000 people now receive them compared to 25,000 in 2009—and 20,000 are children.

It estimates this will rise to 500,000 people by 2015.
