The English Defence League (EDL) is planning another racist rampage in Luton. But it will be met by a united, national protest organised by Unite Against Fascism (UAF).
The EDL was founded in Luton by a group of football hooligans and known fascists. Their protest in May 2009 saw hundreds of thugs rampaging through the town’s Asian area.
They want to repeat this on 5 February and are already planning to turn up in different parts of Luton to avoid being held in one area. That means that gangs of racist thugs will be roaming the streets.
But local activists are organising against them.
“We’ve printed and distributed thousands of leaflets for the UAF counter protest,” Steve Coghlan, a local UAF activist, told Socialist Worker.
“We want a big multicultural protest in the town centre but we will also stand shoulder to shoulder with Muslims planning to defend local mosques, homes and businesses on the day.”
As part of the campaign, UAF supporters and Luton Town football fans leafleted a match towards the end of last year and are to do so again before the protest.
“We had a brilliant response from fans,” one leafleter said.
“Supporters said they didn’t want the EDL in the town or around the club. We gave out over 800 flyers.”
It is vital that anti-racists join the protest against the EDL and defend Luton’s Muslim community on Saturday 5 February.
