Stop this victimisation

Issue No. 1918

BRIAN MUNRO, secretary of the RMT union’s London Transport Region, is under threat of disciplinary action from London Underground management, with the threat of losing his job.

Union activists on the tube see this as a clear case of victimisation, and are determined to defeat this attack.

Management have brought forward charges of gross misconduct over allegations of “intimidation and threatening behaviour” on a picket line.

The decision to discipline Brian has been cleared at the highest level, and it was no coincidence that it was announced on Friday of last week, immediately after our pay deal was settled.

This year’s pay talks were dominated by management’s insistence on 800 job losses.

Members of the RMT responded with a magnificent show of strength in a solid strike on 29 to 30 June.

London mayor Ken Livingstone’s intervention and calls for RMT members to cross their own picket line enraged us all, and added fuel to an already bitter series of talks over pay.

Brian was a principal organiser of our action. This is why he is now being targeted.

“These charges are trumped up,” says Brian, “They are a desperate attempt by London Underground to pick off the secretary of our regional council.”
