Bosses' attempts to divide Formica workers fail

Issue No. 2236

Over 100 North Shields factory workers struck last Saturday over pay.

Workers in the GMB union at the Formica laminate factory rejected a 1.25 percent below-inflation pay deal by more than 90 percent.

Management raised the offer to 2 percent with the condition that temporary workers be placed on a different pay scheme to full-time workers.

Workers refused—and say they will continue to strike every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks.
