A strike hit Rotherham’s Rawmarsh Community School as teachers walked out again on Tuesday of this week. They plan to strike on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
Tuesday was the NUT union members’ ninth day of strikes to fight job cuts.
One teacher on the picket line said, “We see this as a crucial fight, and one which must be won for the sake of students in schools like Rawmarsh everywhere.
“Everyone is up for it and we have had great support from parents and other trade unionists.”
Rotherham Trades Council has now supported a march and demonstration organised to build wider support for the teachers’ “Kids Not Cuts” community campaign.
So far, strikes have won concessions and reduced the number of compulsory redundancies. But the number of jobs to go remains at 34. This includes 25 teachers—a quarter of the teaching staff.
Some teachers believe an all-out strike will be necessary to win. Support for action at other schools in Rotherham is crucial.
