Victimised teacher, Sue Caldwell, formally charged with gross misconduct

Issue No. 2238

Sue Caldwell, a suspended teacher in north London, has been formally charged with gross misconduct by her employer. There will be a hearing in March and the outcome could result in her losing her job.

Sue is the NUT union branch rep at Friern Barnet secondary school and president of Barnet NUT. She was suspended in January after one parent complained that Sue encouraged students to join protests against education cuts.

Sue denies the charges.

The parent who allegedly made the complaint is of a child who Sue does not teach. In contrast, children who Sue does teach have set up a Facebook group in her support. Many of their parents have also posted messages supporting Sue.

The charges against Sue are a disgraceful attack on a union rep and also on students’ right to protest. Sue is the only teacher in Britain to be facing such an attack. The whole trade union movement must urgently get behind her and demand her reinstatement.
