Teachers hold lively strike against academy plans at Chestnut Grove school

Issue No. 2239

NUT union members took to the picket lines today in protest at plans to transform their school into an academy.

Around 25 striking teachers picketed at Chestnut Grove school in Wandsworth, south London.

One NUT member told Socialist Worker, 'People got a good boost from today, we had good solidarity. A couple of parents came to the picket lines as well as sixth form students and lots of delegations of workers from other schools.

'The sixth formers are talking about working with the Anti Academies Alliance in the future. And a lot of students are complaining that they haven't been consulted about the academy plans.'

Governors are set to meet tomorrow to decide whether to make an application to the government to become an academy. Teachers will meet after the half term break to decide their next steps.
