Fight grows to reinstate Sue Caldwell

Issue No. 2240

The campaign to reinstate suspended teacher Sue Caldwell is growing.

Teachers at Friern Barnet secondary school in north London, where Sue is the NUT union branch rep, have voted to support taking industrial action to defend Sue in an indicative ballot.

Teachers voted in favour of the statement: “I am prepared to vote yes in a formal ballot for discontinuous, sustained industrial action against the unfair treatment of the school’s NUT rep Sue Caldwell.”

Sue’s employer has charged her with gross misconduct after one parent complained that she encouraged students to join protests against education cuts. She denies the charges.

This is a serious attack. If Sue is found guilty of gross misconduct, the General Teaching Council could remove her licence to teach in the future.

As well as being the branch NUT rep in her school, Sue is also president of Barnet NUT.

The attack on her is an attack on trade unionists and also on students’ right to protest.

The parent who allegedly complained about Sue is of a student Sue does not teach.

Students who Sue does teach have posted messages of support for her on a Facebook group campaigning for her reinstatement.

There will be a hearing on Friday 11 March where Sue could be dismissed from her job. Every trade unionist needs to urgently campaign for her reinstatement.
