Speech and language therapists' action forces concessions

Issue No. 2242

Speech and language therapists in south London were buoyed last week by news that cuts to their service will not be a big as initially feared.

The workers struck for a day last month after Southwark Primary Care Trust told 11 therapists that their posts were “threatened”.

Striker and Unite union rep Steve Hack said, “Thanks to a high profile campaign—which had fantastic support from parents, schools, the local community and trade unions—the local authority has had second thoughts about taking the axe to a essential frontline service for vulnerable children.

“While there is still much to fight for, we have shown that if you are prepared to stand up for your clients and your jobs, it is more than possible to stop the cuts.”
