Socialist from Egypt to join debate about revolution

Issue No. 2242

Egyptian activist Gigi Ibrahim will be bringing the spirit of the Middle East revolutions to this Sunday’s Revolution In The 21st Century event.

The Socialist Workers Party is hosting the day of debate in central London so that activists from across Britain can analyse the momentous events that are sweeping across the Middle East.

Other speakers include Egyptian activist Wassim Wagdy, Tunisian socialist Mohamed Tonsy, Socialist Worker editor Judith Orr and writer Alex Callinicos.

Gigi is a revolutionary socialist who has been highly involved in the Egyptian revolution.

She told Socialist Worker, “Events in Egypt and Tunisia prove that change under capitalism can happen through the power of the people and revolution.”

Gigi told last weekend’s 6 Billion Ways conference in London, “What happened in Egypt had been brewing for the last ten years, since the 2000 Palestinian intifada (uprising).

“There have been a lot of mobilisations on different issues in that time—all linked to the Mubarak regime.

“Lots of Egyptians were inspired by the Tunisian revolution and began to believe in the process of change from the streets. It empowered people to go to Tahrir Square in Cairo.

“Some people are accrediting the internet with the change, but while it was important for coordinating the various movements, it was the battles on the streets that were crucial.

“The people who took to the streets live on $2 a day.

“It was their power that made the revolution.”

The event will also have sessions on Palestine, permanent revolution, Iran and what makes a revolution.

The day will highlight how Marxist ideas can help explain the world as well as point to how to take the struggle forward.

Everyone should try to get there.
