Coventry teachers say no to academy

Issue No. 2244

Teachers at Tile Hill Wood School and Language College in Coventry struck on Tuesday of this week against plans to turn their school into an academy.

The NUT union members unanimously backed strikes in a ballot, and 75 percent turned out to vote. Workers struck for half a day in the morning.

Chris Denson, an NUT rep at the school said, “It’s been fantastic, with virtually every member on the picket lines and support from parents and staff. The other unions at the school are holding meetings this week and we hope to coordinate our action.”

The NUT is calling for the school’s governors to postpone any decision on academy status until a proper consultation has been held.
