Housing rights under attack

Issue No. 2244

Tory housing minister Grant Shapps is trying to abolish squatters’ rights.

He has published a list of “tips” to stop squatters—and pledged to make it a criminal offence. Currently it is only a civil offence, meaning you can be sued but not jailed.

“I want to lock the door on squatters and their so-called rights once and for all,” Shapps said.

The new laws would also apply to occupations of buildings, for example by workers or students fighting for their rights.
