The government plans to scrap councils’ legal duty to run any libraries at all.
The Tories have launched a “review” of all the legal obligations on councils.
As part of this they say the duty to provide a “comprehensive and efficient” library service under the 1964 Public Libraries and Museums Act may be too “burdensome”.
More than 500 libraries across Britain are already threatened with closure.
This legal attack will open the door to whole towns being left without any libraries.
