Workers in Birmingham council are moving towards a strike against the cuts. Unison union reps have requested that their union start a ballot on 3 May. They told some 1,000 members the news on the coaches home from Saturday’s TUC protest.
“Our magnificent turnout for the march last Saturday has sent another message to the council,” Caroline Johnson, assistant secretary of Birmingham Unison, told Socialist Worker.
“We will fight them and we are fighting to win.”
Some 26,000 people working for Birmingham City Council have been issued with redundancy notices. Around 6,000 face the sack.
The council was due to impose new contracts in April, but has put the date back to October. This follows angry mass meetings of council workers at which they voted unanimously to be balloted for strikes.
Unison must throw every resource into building a huge yes vote in the ballot.
