Liverpool and Newcastle lecturers call strikes to defend jobs

Issue No. 2246

Lecturers in the UCU union at Liverpool Hope University were set to strike on Friday of this week over threatened job cuts.

More than 90 jobs could go. Management ignored a recommendation by the conciliation service Acas to extend the timetable during which workers could go on strike to allow more talks.

The university claims it has to make cuts to save money. But a survey by the Times Higher Education showed that vice-chancellor Gerald Pillay received a 21 percent pay rise last year, pushing his salary up to £199,077.

Newcastle College

UCU members at Newcastle College will strike on Tuesday of next week to save jobs.
