Defend sacked teacher Tony Souter

Issue No. 2247

Tony Souter, an NUT union rep at Kingsbury secondary school in Warwickshire, has been charged with gross misconduct and dismissed from his job.

He is appealing against the decision.

Tony is also the divisional secretary for Warwickshire NUT and has worked as a science teacher for 18 years.

NUT members believe that Tony’s head teacher is using a single incident as an excuse to get rid of an effective union rep.

Last November, one student was hit by a piece of potassium during one of Tony’s lessons and suffered a small burn.

A safety screen was used in accordance with the school’s health and safety practices.

The appropriate medical procedures were followed, and neither the child nor parent made a complaint about Tony’s conduct.

Tony followed the correct school process in reporting the incident. He has an unblemished health and safety record.

The head teacher is arguing that goggles should have been used.
