Socialist Worker

The Turner Contemporary gallery

Issue No. 2248

The Turner Contemporary gallery opened in Margate last week. A brand new art gallery on the seafront, it rises from the site of the lodging house where JMW Turner lived and worked.

It was on these beaches that Turner immortalised the sunlight and seascapes that would make him one of Britain’s greatest painters.

The project, which began in 2001, is not just an art gallery. It is a space for artists to work and interact with local people.

The building, designed by David Chipperfield after a consultation with 8,000 locals, is an architectural joy. Well worth a visit.
