Landfill protest

AROUND 50 protesters blockaded the entrance to a landfill at Path Head, Gateshead, last Saturday. Four truckloads of waste were turned away from the site.

Gateshead council gave the go-ahead for the SITA waste management company to open a new landfill site directly opposite the homes of people living in Stargate, despite the opposition of residents.

“We’re all disgusted at the council’s attitude,” says Jane Kendall, whose house overlooks the proposed new landfill.

After months of going through official channels, Residents Against Rubbish, the protesters’ organisation, decided to take matters into their own hands and organise the demonstration.

“The council took no notice of the technical case,” says Daniel Grey, who has set up a website to coordinate the group’s campaign. “We decided to turn to people power—and now they’re taking more notice.”
