Sri Lanka: UN atrocity report out

Issue No. 2249

A damning new report confirms human rights abuses by the Sri Lankan government during the last months of its war against the Tamil Tigers.

Thousands died in 2009 as government forces overran areas controlled by rebels, who had been fighting a 26-year war for an independent Tamil state.

The United Nations report is critical of both sides. But it estimates that government shelling killed the vast majority of the 40,000 civilians who died.

Government forces deliberately shelled hospitals and Red Cross ships.

It authenticates reports of mass rape and summary execution of prisoners by government forces.

The report concludes that the Sri Lankan government should be investigated for “war crimes”.
