elections for the national executive of Unite, Britain’s biggest union, saw the United Left (UL) group make major gains.
The UL won 40 of the 59 seats declared so far, with six seats still to be announced.
Three Socialist Worker supporters—Ian Allinson, Sara Bennett and Frank Wood—will be members of the new Unite executive after the election.
Unfortunately, the members’ level of participation was low, with some seats uncontested and turn-outs in different sectors ranging from just 4.7 percent to 10.9 percent.
This shows the amount of work needed by the Unite leadership to create a fighting and democratic union that members feel is their own.
