Civil service workers support victimised workers

Issue No. 2253

Over 100 people packed into a fringe meeting about the victimisation of union reps.

Mark Hammond and Sue Kendal, two activists from the immigration service, were suspended after they were involved in organising industrial action.

Sue spoke about the attitude of bosses towards her. “It felt like I was being stalked at work,” she said.

Sue and Mark were charged with producing a satirical newsletter critical of their bosses—they both deny this.

The evidence was based on them being sent the newsletter by email several hours before it was circulated.

Both activists are fighting for their reinstatement.

Other speakers included Jane Brooke, the ex-branch secretary of Land Registry in Weymouth, who was sacked in 2009, and sacked CSA Hastings rep Sam Buckley.
