The Tories have invited Life—a group opposed to all abortions and contraception education—to advise the government on sexual health.
The British Pregnancy Advisory Service, with a 40-year record in providing pregnancy counselling, has been excluded.
Worried? You should be.
Life, and the Christian pro-abstinence group the Silver Ring Thing, have also been made founding members of the Tories’ new Sex and Relationships Council.
This is more than the isolated move by anti-abortion MPs Nadine Dorries and Frank Field to tighten abortion rules—including a “cooling off period” and counselling from an organisation that does not provide abortions.
It is a full-scale attack on the right to free, safe abortions.
The Tories paint a picture of the number of abortions being “out of control” and young girls not taking responsibility for their sexual health.
The reality is the Tories want to return to a time when women were denied control over their bodies and young people were not taught about sex—a time of back street abortions, fear and ignorance.
What is needed is greater access to abortions and an ending of the postcode lottery that sees some women finding it harder to access abortion.
And a fully funded compulsory program of sex education across all schools.
