Home secretary Theresa May this week announced plans to make the government’s Prevent programme even more draconian.
Prevent, introduced under Labour, is the government’s
It demonises Muslims and encourages councils, police and racists to scapegoat and spy on them.
The Tories want to step this up dramatically.
So, the government is to ask doctors to identify individuals “vulnerable” to terrorism.
It blames universities for failing to clamp down on political students—citing 40 universities at particular risk of “radicalising activity”.
It threatens to limit access to internet sites in schools, colleges and libraries.
And it is withdrawing funding and support from mainstream Muslim organisations.
The real terrorists are the governments that kill and maim ordinary people around the world in the name of the “war on terror”.
Their wars and occupations breed more terrorism.
The overhaul of the Prevent strategy is not about tackling terrorism.
It is about silencing dissent and dividing resistance to the Tories.
State Islamophobia will also give confidence to racists and legitimise fascists and the far right.
We have to stand up to Islamophobia and in solidarity with everyone targeted.
