New book will defend multiculturalism

by Hassan Mahamdallie
Issue No. 2256

The Prevent document makes fantastical reading.

Nowhere does it admit that the direct cause of terrorist attacks such as 9/11 and 7/7 is Western foreign policy in the Middle East.

The perpetual war against Afghanistan, the assault on Iraq, the bombing of Libya, and the propping up of Arab dictators friendly to the West, have produced its asymmetrical opposite.

However, Prevent is only one manifestation of a wider project. This government uses Islamophobia as part of its strategy to weaken the ties of solidarity that exist between those under attack from its austerity measures.

The Tory attack on multiculturalism is a class-driven offensive. David Cameron has aligned Britain with the European right wing consensus that Muslims are the means of the West’s decline. They are “the enemy within”, a security threat, and advocates of multiculturalism are to blame.

That is why we are producing a book, Defending Multiculturalism, to help in the fight to defend Muslims and our multicultural way of life.

Defending Multiculturalism, Bookmarks, £8.99. First available at Marxism 2011, London. Contributors include Billy Hayes (CWU), Danny Dorling, Zita Holbourne, Martin Smith, Weyman Bennett, Dr Edie Friedman (Jewish Council for Racial Equality), Michael Rosen, Benjamin Zephaniah, Dilwar Khan (East London Mosque), Salma Yaqoob, Ken Livingstone, Liz Fekete and others.
