Riots spread across China

Issue No. 2256

Thousands of people have rioted in China.

Clashes began after security officers shoved a pregnant street vendor on Friday of last week in the manufacturing city of Xintang in Guangdong province.

She was a migrant worker and other migrants quickly gathered, fighting police with bottles, bricks and stones.

The day before, up to 2,000 protesters attacked government headquarters in Lichuan, Hubei after a politician who had highlighted corruption died in police custody.

And hundreds of migrant workers, furious because their wages hadn’t been paid, fought police in Chaozhou, Guangdong.
