Some 5,000 workers balloting at Doncaster council got an extra reason to vote yes this week as bosses announced another 700 job cuts.
Their Unison union says hundreds of jobs have already gone and further job losses will hit services badly. “This is why we have been balloting for a strike,” said Unison branch secretary Jim Board.
“People are incredibly angry. The jobs they are talking about are some of the lowest paid in the authority, and almost exclusively women. To target them is nothing short of disgraceful.”
He thought the news could boost turnout in the ballot. “This will prompt many of our members who have not voted to reconsider their position and to vote,” he said.
The ballot closes on Thursday of this week. For updates see www.socialistworker.co.uk
