Unity in United Left

Issue No. 2256

SOCIALIST WORKER welcomes the unanimous decision of the United Left National Coordinating Committee (NCC) not to exclude SWP members from the United Left (UL) group in the Unite union.

Socialist Worker has strongly supported the BA cabin crew in their heroic fight against the union-busting attacks of BA management. The paper has argued against the latest offer from BA management. Cabin crew deserve a better deal and they can win more.

While Socialist Worker criticising the offer triggered the debate, some UL supporters argued for the SWP’s exclusion for various reasons.

Some believed that it was inappropriate for UL supporters to publicly disagree with the union’s official stance on the dispute, especially now that the left leads Unite.

Socialist Worker’s response to the debate is available here.

The NCC decision means that the UL continues as a united organisation which allows lively debate. This is crucial given the scale of attacks on workers from the government and employers.

It was a debate at the UL AGM which led to the Unite executive’s recent statement against the cuts.

The NCC made clear that, while the UL accepts that there will be differences between left comrades, they remain unhappy with Socialist Worker’s stance. There will be times when Socialist Worker takes positions that aren’t popular, or which other comrades on the left disagree with.

But the SWP is keen to ensure we maintain dialogue, working relationships and unity as far as possible.
