Conference delegates back council strikers

Issue No. 2257

Doncaster Unison branch secretary Jim Board got a roar of applause as he told conference delegates that council workers there plan to join united strikes on 30 June.

“On the promise of coordinated action our members voted 66 percent in favour of industrial action to defend every job,” he said.

“We are stronger together than we are apart.”

Birmingham delegate Philip O’Shea agreed. “Unity is strength, and that’s what we’re here for,” he said.

With the branch’s ballot result out soon, he appealed for solidarity. He said, “Support it with every tool you can. We’ve got to fight these cuts.”

Conference warmly supported council workers in Southampton who have been taking action for six weeks so far. Southampton delegate Mark Roberts thanked the conference for its “support and solidarity”.

“The action will continue,” he said. “We will never, never give up the fight.”

South east region delegate Mark Chiverton added that “people up and down the country have been inspired” by the action.
